Lowcountry students make stops on history trail
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Dozens of middle school students from the South Carolina Lowcountry can learn about the Civil War as part of a celebration on the James Island History trail.
Tuesday’s event is part of the annual heritage celebration near Charleston.
The students are stopping at Fort Johnson, where the first shot of the Civil War was fired at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. The three-hour tour also takes them to the ground where the Battle of Secessionville was fought. It was there that Confederate troops repulsed federals trying to move on Charleston.
Students are also learning about how the main house at McLeod Plantation was used as a Union hospital and about the Battle of Sol-Legare Island between Charleston and Folly Beach.
