COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — “It was a blessing from God, basically,” says Tierra Jackson, whose layaway was paid off by a stranger. That’s how Tierra Jackson felt when her friend delivered the news that someone had paid off her Christmas layaway. “He said, well Kmart just called and said someone paid your lay away off…and I said no they didn’t and he said, well yes they did they only left a dollar balance and I said no, no body didn’t pay the lay-away off,” says Jackson. But on Wednesday afternoon, she found out they had. The balance on the account was a little more than one hundred dollars and everything on it is for her year old son, Davon. Just last week, Tierra heard of layaway angels from a co-worker, but she never expected it to happen to her. “For it to happen to me a week later, it was amazing, I was shocked,” says Jackson. Maesha Robinson works in the layaway department and she was also shocked by the so called layaway angels, especially the first time she met one. “I had no idea what they were talking about and they were talking so secretively, like they didn’t want anybody to know about it and I had to call a manager,” says Maesha Robinson, Kmart employee Maesha says the more people hear about it, the more people participate. “It’s multiplying,” says Robinson. And so are the amounts they’re paying, we’re told one person gave more than 2,000 dollars to pay off the layaways of others. Store managers at this K-Mart on Ft. Jackson Boulevard say they’ve seen so many lay-a-away angels, they’ve actually lost count of them. Layaway angels aren’t just here in Columbia, they’re popping up all over the country, so many places that some are calling it a Christmas phenomenon sweeping the nation one family at a time. Families like Tierra Jackson’s, who has just two things to say about these anonymous givers. “They’re nice, nice people, generous,” says Jackson. Now, she is looking forward to just one more thing on Christmas morning. “My son’s expression on his face when he sees all of his toys,” says Jackson.
