Homeless man living in vacant home shot in face

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — Spartanburg police say the owners of a vacant home for sale shot a 31-year-old man staying inside.

Spartanburg Public Safety Capt. Art Littlejohn says the owners went to check on their home Tuesday after being informed someone was staying there.

Littlejohn say Gregory Wells of Spartanburg met them at the door. Both owners were armed, and Wells was shot in the face with a revolver during a struggle. Police believe Wells is homeless. The couple did not know him. It’s unclear how long he had been in the home.

Police have not identified which owner shot Wells. Littlejohn says he was conscious when an ambulance took him to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A hospital spokesman said Tuesday evening Wells was in serious condition.

No charges have been filed.
