SC insurance agency director resigns

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The head of South Carolina’s insurance agency has resigned, 11 months after Gov. Nikki Haley picked him for the position.

Haley spokesman Rob Godfrey confirmed Wednesday night that David Black is stepping down from his post as head of the Department of Insurance. Black could not immediately be reached.

Haley said in January that she picked Black because of his experience and customer-friendly attitude. The Senate confirmed Black for the job in February.

His salary is $112,407.

Black was president and CEO of Liberty Life Insurance from 2004 until March 2010. Before that, he was the company’s lawyer and vice president.

Black replaced Scott Richardson, a former GOP state senator that former Gov. Mark Sanford appointed to the job in February 2007.
