Deputy Gets New K-9, Resident Foots Bill
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Nearly a month after his K-9 partner is shot and killed in the line of duty, a Midlands sheriff’s deputy get a new four-legged police dog, with the help of a resident. Richland County Sheriff, Master Deputy Warren Cavanagh, is getting to know his new K-9 partner, Chico, a three-and-a-half-year-old Belgian Mallinois from Holland. He says the two are still working to build trust. This, after Cavanagh’s previous partner, Fargo, was shot and killed in December while tracking a suspected armed robber. The partnership would not be possible if not for long time law enforcement support, Leonard Price. Price, who, back in 1965, donated the first ever police dog to the sheriff’s department, handed Sheriff Leon Lott a check for $7,500 to donate it to the department. Cavanagh says he has mixed feelings about moving on without Fargo but knows he and Chico have much more work to do.
