SC woman jailed for having messy yard gets hand

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP) — A Mount Pleasant woman jailed for having a messy yard is getting a helping hand.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (http://bit.ly/yTiclZ ) 53-year-old Linda Ruggles was released from jail Thursday after serving six days of a 10-day sentence. She was jailed after she failed to pay a fine last year for having a messy yard.

On Thursday a contractor who read about her plight offered to fix her leaking roof for free. Landscapers offered to clean her yard and others asked about making home repairs.

Ruggles is a photographer who has been struggling because of the recession.

She said she had no money to pay the $480 ticket and was using all her money to keep her home from foreclosure.
