2012 South Carolina State of the State

(WOLO) COLUMBIA, S.C., Governor Nikki Haley addressed the State mentioning a list of successful changes that have been made in the past year. Going from a state deficit to a surplus, bringing 20 thousand jobs to the State and 5 billion dollars worth of investments were among them. However, the Governor says she will continue fighting for more jobs and financial security for South Carolina’s families. Governor Haley also vowing to make even more cuts in overspending by putting an end to the cost of living wage increase for retirees and shutting down the General Assembly’s retirement system, so they are getting the same pension other state employees receive. There were mixed reactions to the Governor’s hour long speech from lawmakers who were in attendance. While Senate Majority Leader Harvey Peeler said he was impressed with the change that has happened over the past year, others were not as impressed. Representative of York County John King said “I personally don’t see where she has made any progress as Governor…It’s not a great day in South Carolina as long as the people of South Carolina are suffering.”
