At Least 2 SC Officers Injured in Prison Riot

RIDGEVILLE, S.C. (AP) – Authorities are not yet sure what prompted a disturbance among inmates at Lieber Correctional Institution near Ridgeville during which at least two corrections officers were injured. About 230 inmates were in a section of the prison where inmates overpowered two guards and took their keys Wednesday night. As many as 200 outside law enforcement officers were summoned to the prison. Corrections Department spokesman Clark Newsom said that the prison remained on lockdown Thursday. Newsom said two corrections officers were treated and released at a local hospital although Dorchester County officials said three were transported. Newsom says there were no reports of inmates being injured. He said tear gas was used early Thursday as officers restored order.
