SC police shoot woman who was threatening suicide
BURGESS, S.C. (AP) — A Horry County police officer shot and wounded an armed woman who had barricaded herself inside her home and was threatening to commit suicide.
A statement by county spokeswoman Lisa Bourcier says the shooting happened Saturday.
Police were called to a home in the Burgess community where a woman with a handgun was barricaded inside a closet where she was threatening to kill herself.
During unsuccessful negotiations to convince her to put down the gun, the woman acted in a way that caused one officer to fire his weapon, hitting her in the leg.
She was taken to a nearby hospital and her injuries are not considered life-threatening.
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating, which is standard procedure for shootings that involve police officers.
