SC woman accused of taking money from centers

GAFFNEY, S.C. (AP) — The former director of the Senior Centers of Cherokee County has been arrested and accused of taking more than $4,000 from the operation.

Fifty-four-year-old Joan Bailey Wood turned herself in to police in Gaffney on Monday afternoon.

Wood had worked at the agency that provides programs, activities and support for senior citizens since 1996. She had been director for the past several years.

Detective Sgt. Brian Blanton says between June and August, Wood deposited money for the Senior Centers into her personal account and wrote checks to family members.

Blanton says staff members discovered discrepancies while preparing tax documents.

Wood resigned in September.

It was unclear if she has a lawyer.
