Man charged after woman found strangled under home

GREENWOOD, S.C. (AP) — A man has been arrested in the death of a 38-year-old woman found last week under an abandoned home in Greenwood.

Police say 49-year-old Jermel Tompkins has been charged with murder in the death of Erica Wideman.

Police found both Greenwood residents in the crawlspace of a home Friday.

Wideman was unresponsive when she was found and died at a hospital Monday. Tompkins fled while being questioned by officers but was arrested later.

An autopsy showed Wideman was strangled.

Police have not said why Wideman and Tompkins were in the crawlspace. It wasn’t known if Tompkins had an attorney.
