Black vets highlight SC Black History Month event
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP) — A forum on the accomplishments and struggles of black veterans is scheduled for the USS Yorktown as part of Black History Month.
The event is set for Friday aboard the World War II-era aircraft carrier at the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum on Charleston Harbor.
Speakers include the director of the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce Maj. Gen. Abraham Turner as well as the commandant of the Military Magnet Academy in Charleston County, Col. Joseph Dawson, who is a Vietnam vet.
Also speaking is Marcus Cox, the founding director of the African American studies program at The Citadel.
