Little Known SC Black History Facts
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Little known black history facts exist about South Carolina more than one might think, and we got assistance from a local Catholic nun to help us uncover some of the hidden treasures, starting with her school. If you ride down the 2,000 block of Hampton Street in Columbia’s historic Waverly community, you might miss St. Martin de Porres Catholic School. Since 1936, it’s been a safe haven for black Catholics after many of them say they endured the ills of segregation at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Today, 75 years later, they prepare to celebrate the church school’s trials and triumphs. Principal, Sister Roberta Fulton, one of about 300 black Catholic nuns in the country, and Professor of African American studies at the University of South Carolina, Dr. Marvin McCallister, help us uncover some of the state’s hidden treasures.
