Columbia airport to get less revealing scanners

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Air travelers in South Carolina’s capital will soon be able to board their planes without images of their unclothed bodies being viewed by security personnel.

The State newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/A9VQP7 ) that Columbia Metropolitan Airport is due to have the less revealing full-body scanners up and running next week.

The technology is already in place at airports in Charleston and Myrtle Beach. The Transportation Security Administration announced last year it would use new technology to help allay concerns about privacy.

The new scanners don’t use the image of an actual passenger on the screen, showing a generic outline instead. The software is designed to recognize items in the generic image that could pose a security threat.
