DHEC reports first confirmed cases of BA.2 omicron sub-variant

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)– The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control reported the first confirmed cases of the BA.2 sub-variant of the omicron variant in the Palmetto State, coming straight from the Midlands. DHEC’s public health director says early data shows the subvariant is more transmissible, but it does not appear to cause more severe disease.

Although COVID-19 cases are declining in the state, she says deaths seem to continue rising, adding this is no time to get comfortable.

Dr. Traxler says it is important for those who are not yet vaccinated to get their shot now, and support the nearly 2.6 million South Carolinians who are fully vaccinated.
