SC man accused of trying to take sheriff’s trailer

GAFFNEY, S.C. (AP) — It’s probably not a good idea to try to steal a trailer from the sheriff’s backyard. It probably doesn’t help to tell him you are taking the trailer for someone who bought it.

Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller says he had not sold his trailer.

Mueller confronted 37-year-old Eric George Bennett in the backyard of the sheriff’s home Saturday morning.

Bennett told the sheriff he was picking the trailer up for someone who had purchased it.

Mueller says he let Bennett go while he checked out the man’s story. But officers kept up with Bennett and took him into custody Wednesday and charged him with grand larceny.

Bennett is awaiting a bond hearing. It wasn’t clear if he has an attorney.
