North Charleston holds to win Class 2A boys title
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Jamal Baldwin and Anthony Williams scored 15 points each and North Charleston survived a frantic rally to win the South Carolina boys Class 2A state championship with a 49-48 victory over Newberry Saturday at the Colonial Life Arena.
The Cougars (23-6) opened the game on an 18-0 run but saw most of that lead slip away. Newberry’s Trey Miller missed a three-point attempt at the buzzer.
Newberry (25-4) trailed by 14 points with four minutes to go. Miller made two 3-pointers and Notorious Booker another in the Bulldogs’ closing 16-3 run.
Williams’ foul shot with 55 seconds left was the difference.
Miller led Newberry with 16 points.
It was North Charleston’s first title since winning the Class 4A championship in 1997.
