COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Taking in a ballgame with a hot dog, or peanuts and crackerjack is an American tradition. Former Gamecock pitcher Bill Camp gives South Carolina baseball its own tradition. The 88-year-old Camp is better known as “The Candy Man” at Carolina Stadium. The World War II Navy Vet wanders the crowd during the game tossing and handing out candy to other fans of all ages. Camp, a former USC pitcher in late 1940s and early 50s, says he’s not superstitious, but you will find him changing his routine if the Gamecocks need a good play. Camp has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure but says, as long as he’s physically able to get to the games, he’ll be handing out candy at Carolina Stadium.
