Charleston delegation in DC to promote bases
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A delegation from the chamber of commerce in Charleston has visited Washington to promote local military installations as more base closings are expected around the nation.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (http://bit.ly/GPTmob) the group suggested the area for the U.S. Africa Command when it leaves Germany.
The Pentagon has proposed rounds of base closings next year and in 2015. But Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri says she won’t allow her armed services subcommittee to consider closings next year.
Mary Graham of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce says that could have a down side because it could leave base closing decisions to the Pentagon, instead of the more public deliberations of a Base Closure and Realignment Commission.
