Offsite power outage reported at SC nuclear plant
YORK, S.C. (AP) — Officials say crews are working to restore offsite power to a nuclear plant in South Carolina.
A news release issued Wednesday night says the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is monitoring the situation at the Catawba nuclear power plant, located near York, S.C., about 18 miles south of Charlotte, N.C. The plant is operated by Duke Energy.
Officials say one of the two units at the plant was already shut down for an outage and the other unit automatically shut down after losing offsite power.
The NRC says there was no radiation released or impact to plant workers or the public. Officials will review the cause of the outage and determine if additional inspections are needed.
