Minor leak forces shutdown of Oconee reactor
SALEM, S.C. (AP) — One of the three nuclear reactors at Oconee Nuclear Station has been shut down.
Authorities say a small leak in a non-radioactive cooling system forced engineers to power down the reactor Friday morning as a precaution.
Officials say the leak was contained to the reactor and there no threat to the public. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission was notified.
A report from the NRC shows just one of the three reactors was operating at full power Friday. Officials say a second reactor is at reduced power as officials get ready to refuel it.
