Man who killed 2 outside home couldn’t have gun

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a man who shot two suspects he said were trying to break into his Spartanburg apartment was prohibited from having a weapon.

The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reports (http://bit.ly/IsTaaI ) that 29-year-old Douglas Williams was convicted of forgery in 2008 and placed on probation. The conviction prevents him from being able to carry a gun or own ammunition legally.

Investigators say Williams shot and killed 22-year-old Michael Gentry-Hill Jr. and 18-year-old Darren Hill around 12:10 a.m. Saturday. Deputies say Williams told investigators he came home and caught the men trying to break into his apartment. Authorities say one of the men was wearing a ski mark.

Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright will announce whether charges will be filed in the case Tuesday.
