NRC inspectors visiting SC nuclear plant
YORK, S.C. (AP) — Federal regulators have begun a special inspection of a South Carolina nuclear plant that lost power last week.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says three inspectors from its regional office in Atlanta are visiting the Catawba Nuclear Station in York County this week.
Generators began powering the plant April 4, when the facility about 18 miles south of Charlotte, N.C., lost offsite power. One of the plant’s two units was already shut down for an outage. The other unit automatically shut down after losing offsite power, which has since been restored.
Duke Energy says no workers or members of the public were in danger because of the outage.
The NRC says it expects to issue a report on the issue within 45 days of the inspection.
