Man sentenced to 10 years in slaying from 1977
GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — A man will serve 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to a killing that took place nearly 35 years ago.
Prosecutors said 56-year-old Darnell Guyton pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter Thursday in the November 1977 death of a 53-year-old Greek immigrant in Greenville.
Authorities say Guyton followed Thomas Bikas for several blocks before beating him to death and taking his wallet.
Prosecutors say the 10-year sentence was part of a plea deal based on the defendant’s age and health and the law that was in effect at the time of the crime. Guyton was arrested in March 2011.
