SC War Veterans Share Memories, DC Memorial Visit
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – South Carolina military veterans are sharing memories and war stories after their visit to the World War II memorial in Washington. Two World War II veterans from Sumter joined a veteran from the South Carolina Army National Guard on the Wednesday trip. Gordon Rettke, Charles Shaw and James Moye say they were overwhelmed by the welcome they received. The 89-year-old Rettke was a Navy pilot. The 88-year-old Shaw was part of the allied invasion of Italy, where he was wounded in battle. The three men were among 100 World War II veterans and their escorts on a tour set up by the nonprofit group Honor Flight of South Carolina.
