Woman regains competency, charged with killing mom
AIKEN, S.C. (AP) — Prosecutors say a woman deemed mentally unfit to stand trial for killing her mother in 2007 has regained her mental competency and been charged with murder.
The Aiken Standard reports (http://bit.ly/IXIUMj ) that 26-year-old Christina Mavris was denied bond Wednesday following her transfer from getting court-ordered, inpatient treatment to the Aiken County jail.
Authorities say Mavris stabbed her 55-year-old mother to death in her home in May 2007, then set it on fire and called 911. Her mother, Dana Davis, was a teacher at an Aiken middle school.
Mavris’ sister says she should not have been taken out of the mental hospital. Madalyn Wheatley told the newspaper that her sister still needs mental health care and that their mother would have wanted to make sure her daughter was OK.
