Vote could set lieutenant governor-governor ticket
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The South Carolina Senate has approved a resolution asking voters whether the governor and lieutenant governor should run on the same ticket, but not until 2018.
The Senate approved Thursday a resolution putting the question to voters on November’s ballot. The House passed the measure in March 2011, but asked whether the two should begin running together in 2014.
An amendment proposed by Sen. Jake Knotts changed that to 2018.
Gov. Nikki Haley calls it a blatant case of personal politics, so that it doesn’t take effect while she’s in office. Governors are limited to two terms.
Knotts says he was trying to take the politics out of the equation by extending the date. He accuses her of wanting to pick a running mate to knock off any opposition.
