Sheriff warns of rise in scams
COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott is warning citizens about a scam aimed at stealing money and property. Sheriff Lott said suspects are going door to door, distribution sites, and shelters posing as workers with an organization, such as FEMA, the National Guard and others. Sheriff Leon Lott stated that suspects have been going to homes claiming to be part of various clean-up crews, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), or repairmen with the intent to be let onto the property where they then steal your money or property of unsuspecting flood victims. The Sheriff stated that it is crucial to remain cautious and ask for proper identification that confirms who they are representing.
