Become an organ donor on Facebook.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — According to Donate Life America, every eleven minutes someone is added to the national organ transplant waiting list. “A heart , lung, kidney liver, um pancreas, in someway someone needs an organ,” says Erika Veletto, Family Support Counselor for LifePoint South Carolina. Veletto says more than one thousand of those on the list are from South Carolina. She works with the families on the decision to donate. “As much as they don’t want to say goodbye, their loved one is gone and organ donation is a way to that they can live on and help others,” says Veletto. “One person or one family’s decision to donate can impact multiple families,” says Courtney Cable, a local nurse. Cable has seen the decision process first hand. “I’m a nurse in the ICU at Palmetto Health and I see patients and families making the decision to donate you know on a pretty regular basis,” says Cable. But it goes further than a hospital room. Crandall Sims reporting, “A red heart on your license in South Carolina indicates you’re an organ donor and chances are you went to a DMV behind me in order to register. But that process is now a lot easier.” Say goodbye to the long lines at the DMV and hello to Facebook. This week the social media site announced a partnership with Donate Life America to get more people registered as organ donors. “It’s impact has been huge, on a normal day, we have one to four people who register through donate life’s website..215 people since yesterday have registered,” says Veletto.
