Educational bone marrow donor drive held at USC

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Student athlete Ahty Johnson hosted an educational bone marrow donor drive Sunday afternoon. Johnson is a member of the Carolina Track and Field team. She was diagnosed with aplastic anemia in 2010. The rare blood disease causes bone marrow to stop producing blood cells. Since being diagnosed, Johnson has made it her mission to educate as many people as possible about getting in a bone marrow registry, and potentially saving a life. “There is no needles, no blood,” Johnson says. “You just swab your cheek and that’s it. From there, you will be placed on a registry.” To learn more about getting registered, go to bethematch.org. Be the Match is the world’s largest and most diverse registry.
