No Tanning for children under 14
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — “We would never let anyone under the age of 14 in the rooms,” says Courtney Cagle, Assistant Manager of Carolina Tan Factory on Two Notch Road. Cagle says if you aren’t 14, you aren’t allowed to tan in tanning beds. “In South Carolina, children under the age of 14 are not allowed to tan,” says Cagle. But you are allowed to wait for your parent in the lobby. “We allow children to come in with their parents and they’re allowed to sit right here and wait for their parents,” says Cagle. But what about older children? “Minors between the ages of 14 and 17 are allowed to tan with a parental consent as long as the parent comes in with them to sign for it,” says Cagle. No signature, no tanning. “We’ve had them walk back out and we’ve had them ask to take the forms home and have Mom sign them and we don’t allow that either,” says Cagle. They also don’t allow more than one person in a tanning room. “That includes minors or what not, we only allow one person in the room at a time,” says Cagle. Crandall Sims reporting, ” According to South Carolina state laws, only the client is allowed in the tanning bed or the tanning room.” Cagle says health concerns also play a role. “The light that’s omitted from the tanning bed units, you don’t want to be exposed to that without wearing goggles,” says Cagle. But the tanning room aren’t the only things monitored at Carolina Tan Factory. “We moderate exposure times for our clients as well, I mean we can’t obviously tell them how many times a week they can come in to tan, but we follow them from the very beginning to the end as far as their tanning exposure goes,” say Cagle. With state laws in tow. “Absolutely, absolutely,” says Cagle.
