Vandals Trash Orangeburg-Wilkinson
ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WOLO) — Classes were cancelled at Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School Monday after authorities say the twenty classrooms were vandalized. The incident had Seniors at the school worried about their prom, which is scheduled for this weekend. “They had no reason to do it, I believe,” says Scott Gardner, a student at Orangeburg-Wilkinson. Monday afternoon students at Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School were reacting to news that their school had been vandalized. “I wish it hadn’t happened, it seems like something totally unnecessary,” says Nicholas Goodwin, a student at Orangeburg-Wilkinson. Police say they received a fire alarm from the school around 3:30 Monday morning, but when they arrived the school was not on fire. Instead, twenty classrooms had been vandalized. “There was paint in the art room, that was kinda splashed on the walls, that sort of thing, there were some windows broken out,” says Greg Carson, District Five Spokesperson. Carson says the vandalized classrooms were chosen at random and at least a couple of laptops were stolen, but he says there could be more. He also tell us, investigators are looking through surveillance footage from cameras at the school. Two juveniles are currently charged in the crime. However, because of their age their names have not been released. Even with the arrests, students at Orangeburg-Wilkinson are worried about their high school prom. “Prom is at the school and if security is an issue already, that means they’re going to have to get through extra checks and searches to make sure everything is okay at our school,” says Goodwin. “They started having Prom here at the school a couple of years ago and might not be in shape enough for us to have it here this year,” says Whitley Williams, student at Orangeburg-Wilkinson. But Greg Carson says students don’t need to be concerned. “Nothing is in jeopardy, like I said tomorrow we will resume classes, everything will be back to normal,” says Carson. The investigation into this incident is on-going.
