Kershaw County Proposal Dies

(WOLO) LUGOFF, S.C. Kershaw County Council Members say they wanted to give residents an alternative to a financially strapped Sheriff’s office. However, many of the residents who packed Council chambers said they couldn’t find any reason to fix a system that isn’t even broken. The Ordinance would have created a police force that would fall under the leadership of the administration. Councilmen Gary says the purpose would have been to cut down on the police turnover rate and put more of the department’s liability on the county. Contrary to beliefs, Councilmen ? said the proposal was not an attack on Sheriff Jim Matthews. Sheriff Matthews who attended the meeting says the motive for the resolution isn’t important. What is, is making sure the voices of the people opposed to losing their rights to vote in a sheriff were heard. The resolution is dead for now, but could be re-visited if county council is able to find out how cost effective and how efficient a force would be for the county.
