Columbia , S.C. (WOLO) — Thousands of South Carolinians are expected to hit the road Thanksgiving weekend. Law enforcement officials across the state are prepared to keep the roads safe on the busiest travel day of the year. For several residents who hit the road early Wednesday morning, the traffic was not too backed up. “We were really expecting a lot of traffic but it’s been nice,” said Dawn Goodman. “So far it hasn‘t been bad,” added Janelle Clifton. However, officials said to expect delays. AAA projects more than 660,000 South Carolinians will hit the road for Thanksgiving weekend, up 0.6% from last year. “If you‘re going to be traveling pack your patience because you are going to be seeing a lot of motorists on the highway,” said South Carolina State Trooper David Jones. Law enforcement officials are urging motorists to be responsible while traveling. Trooper Jones said they will be out in full force looking for violations. “Don‘t get behind the wheel of a car if you‘ve been drinking, if you‘re going to be traveling plan ahead, there’s no need to speed and please make sure you wear your seatbelt,” said Trooper Jones. The increase in traffic across the midlands will extend into the weekend as thousands pour in to watch the University of South Carolina Gamecocks take on the Clemson Tigers. “That’s going to bring 100,000 plus people through the midlands as well,” said Trooper Jones. “So we‘re going to have troopers in place throughout the entire weekend.” Officials remind motorists Sunday will also be a very busy travel day.
