Sankey To Start As SEC Commissioner June 1st

Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive is handing over the reins to Greg Sankey sooner than expected.

Slive announced Friday at the end of the league’s spring meetings that Sankey will take over on Monday. His retirement was initially expected to take place after his contract expired on July 31.

CIU Athletics Director Earns National Award

Columbia International University Athletics Director Kim Abbott has been recognized for her Christian character by the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA). Abbott was awarded the Game Plan 4 LIFE Female Athletic Staff Character Award at the NCCAA Hall of Fame Banquet held during the NCCAA’s national convention May 28 in Indiana. CIU is a member of the NCCAA.

USC Women Add Another All-ACC Transfer

South Carolina head women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley announced that Kaela Davis (Suwanee, Ga./Buford HS) has signed a financial aid agreement to attend the University and play for the Gamecocks. Davis, who was a two-time All-ACC selection at Georgia Tech, will have two years of eligibility beginning in 2016-17.

SEC Hoops Changes Schedule Format

The Southeastern Conference has announced a men’s basketball scheduling model beginning in 2015-16 that features three permanent opponents.

Each SEC team will play the other 13 teams at least one time during league play. They will then play their three permanent opponents a second time and the remaining two games will be scheduled on a rotating basis.

Martin Earns 2nd Team All-American Honors

South Carolina senior first baseman Kyle Martin earned second-team Louisville Slugger All-America honors as chosen by Collegiate Baseball. The team was announced on Thursday morning. Martin led the Gamecocks in all three Triple Crown categories batting .350 (71-for-203) with 14 homers and 56 RBI.

Gamecocks Ready To Tee Off NCAA Championships

The sixth-ranked South Carolina men’s golf team is among the final 30 teams playing for the national title for the third-straight year. Play begins at the NCAA Championship on Friday and runs through Wednesday, June 3 at the par-72, 7,483-yard layout at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla. The Gamecocks punched their ticket to the championship with a second-place finish at the NCAA Bremerton Regional.
