Sophomore wide receiver Pharoh Cooper’s breakout season was rewarded in a big way Monday afternoon, as he was named to the Associated Press’ All-SEC first team as a wide receiver and second team as an all-purpose back. Senior offensive lineman A.J. Cann made the second team, the first postseason honor from the AP for the four-year starter.
Down six with less than a minute to play, Clemson scored the game’s final six points to force overtime and eventually pulled away for a 68-65 win over No. 18 ranked Arkansas on Sunday. The win improved the Tigers to 5-3 on the season, while dropping the Razorbacks to 6-2 overall.
For the second-straight week, South Carolina guard/forward A’ja Wilson earned Freshman of the Week honors, the league office announced today. The Heathwood Hall product was the team’s top scorer last week, posted several career highs and helped the Gamecocks stay undefeated with three victories, including one against No. 9/8 Duke in their first top-10 match-up of the season.
Wilson averaged 14.3 points per game for the week, scoring in double figures in all three games to stretch her streak of seven games. The final two points to keep the streak alive came on a put-back in the final two seconds at Duke, giving her 10 points for the game on 4-of-8 shooting.
South Carolina women’s basketball head coach Dawn Staley wasted little time returning her community service work after her team’s dramatic win at Duke on Sunday, traveling to Mt. Pleasant, S.C., on Monday morning. The co-founder of INNERSOLE addressed Pinckney Elementary School’s fifth graders before meeting privately with the students who qualified to receive sneakers from her organization.
South Carolina sophomore guard Duane Notice was named the SEC co-Player of the Week on Monday after averaging 23.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and three assists in wins over Marshall and Oklahoma State last week. The weekly honor is the first of Notice’s career.
Basketball Travelers Inc., officially announced the field for the 2015 Ezybonds Global Payments U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam, where it was announced that South Carolina would be one of eight participating teams in the 16th annual event. Also joining the Gamecocks in St. Thomas, USVI, will be DePaul, Florida State, Indiana State, Hofstra, Norfolk State, Ohio and Tulsa. The event will be held Nov. 20-23, 2015, at the University of the Virgin Islands. It will be the first-ever appearance for the Gamecocks at the Paradise Jam.
