Reports:Clowney Out 4-6 Weeks

According to multiple reports, former Gamecock Jadeveon Clowney will have knee surgery on a torn meniscus Monday and will miss the next 4-6 weeks.

The #1 overall NFL draft pick left the Houston Texans season opener just before halftime. Clowney appeared to injure his right knee by landing awkwardly after attempting to knock down a Robert Griffin III pass with less than 3 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter.

Former Gamecock Kicked In The Face

Former Gamecock Spencer Lanning makes a living kicking a football. Sunday he was on the receiving end of a kick…to the face.

The Cleveland Browns punter was covering his own punt when Pittsburgh return man Antonio Brown tried to hurdle him. Lanning received a foot to the face but helped to bring Brown down. Brown was hit with a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty.

Panthers Win Opener At Tampa 20-14

Cam Newton watched from the sideline as his backup handled the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Derek Anderson filled in nicely for the injured two-time Pro Bowl quarterback, throwing for 230 yards and two touchdowns Sunday in Carolina’s 20-14 season-opening victory.

Clowney Injured In NFL Debut

Houston’s Jadeveon Clowney, the top overall pick in this year’s draft, injured his knee Sunday and didn’t return against Washington.

Coach Bill O’Brien didn’t provide much more information on Clowney’s health after the game.

“They think it’s a good prognosis, so it looks like it’s going to be OK,” O’Brien said. “He may miss some time, he may not. Who knows? So we’ll know better as the week goes on.”

Gamecocks Slip In National Polls

The University of South Carolina football team slipped a couple notches, but remained in both national polls released today. The Gamecocks (1-1) dropped three spots in the Associated Press poll to No. 24, while they fell two slots to No. 23 in the Amway Coaches’ poll. South Carolina was ranked 21st in both polls last week prior to a 33-23 win over East Carolina on Saturday night.

USC Women Blank High Point 2-0

On first half goals from junior Raina Johnson and sophomore Chelsea Drennan, No. 9 South Carolina defeated High Point 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Gamecocks improve to 5-1-0 with the result, and the Panthers (2-1-2) collect their first loss of the season.
