COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier is just one win away from 200 victories in his college coaching career — a milestone he barely recognizes.
On his radio call-in show Thursday night, Spurrier said he will wait and make a game time decision on his starting quarterback when the Gamecocks play UAB Saturday. Dylan Thompson filled in for Connor Shaw last week against East Carolina.
Senior cornerback Akeem Auguste is recovering from a thigh injury quicker than expected, and could be back for the Gamecocks in next Saturday’s SEC home game against Missouri. Defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward gave an update on Auguste’s status after Thursday afternoon’s USC practice.
Florida and Tennessee meet up in a top-25 SEC battle Saturday. Both teams have gotten off to 2-0 starts in different ways. No. 18 Florida is running the ball early and often, a slow-it-down, ground-and-pound attack featuring senior Mike Gillislee. No. 23 Tennessee is throwing it all over the field, relying on junior Tyler Bray’s accuracy, arm strength and decision-making skills to direct an up-tempo, often no-huddle, offense.
Today the SEC announced that Ko Simpson is this year’s USC representative in the 2012 Class of SEC Football Legends. The class will be honored prior to the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta December 1.
