Cops: Pageland officer shoots man who killed wife

PAGELAND, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a Pageland police officer shot a man who killed his wife after the suspect refused to drop his gun.

Police Chief Larry Brown told WPDE-TV that the State Law Enforcement Division is investigating exactly what happened Tuesday evening and whether the officer was justified in killing Barry Louallen.

Brown says his officers confronted Louallen after he called 911 and told dispatchers he shot his wife, Diane.

Investigators say the woman’s body was found in the road and Louallen was pacing nearby with a gun in his hand.

The chief says Louallen refused several orders to drop the gun, then pointed the weapon at officers before he was shot.

The name of the officer who shot Louallen has not been released.
