Miss South Carolina pageant begins in new home

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — For the first time in its 75-year history, the Miss South Carolina pageant is being held in Columbia.

The event opens Tuesday with preliminary rounds at the Township Auditorium. Miss South Carolina will be crowned from the 43 local pageant winners on Saturday.

Young women ranging from Miss Blue Ridge Foothills to Miss Coastal Empire will be judged in preliminary talent, swimsuit and evening wear competitions. The contestants will also be interviewed.

The Miss South Carolina Teen pageant is also going on in Columbia this week.

The pageants have spent the past 15 years in Spartanburg.
