Fines grow for lieutenant gov hopeful Campbell

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A son of the late Gov. Carroll Campbell owes nearly $380,000 in penalties to the state Ethics Commission for failing to file campaign finance reports from an unsuccessful 2006 bid for lieutenant governor.

Mike Campbell said Wednesday the fines have grown since he didn’t file a report closing out his campaign in 2006 after he lost a primary bid. Campbell says he has not filed required quarterly reports since then.

Through April 26 the State Ethics Commission showed the tab was $328,600. The fines are growing for each of the overdue reports at $700 a day and that’s added more than $54,000 in penalties.

Campbell’s lawyer Todd Kincannon says Campbell takes the issue seriously and will file reports soon.
