COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — It’s been just over a month since the attack on 18 year old Carter Strange in Five Points. Since then, law enforcement officials have taken steps to make sure customers are safe, by enacting an emergency curfew and adding extra patrols in the area. But Monday night, Five Points business owners took another step to make sure what happened to Carter doesn’t happen to anyone else. Wine, food, tents and chairs could all be found in the parking lot of Mr. Friendly’s and Cellar on Greene, Monday night. The two restaurants came together to host a benefit for 18 year old Carter Strange, whom was beaten back in June while jogging home. As a result of the beating, Carter had to undergo emergency brain surgery. After hearing his story, the owners of Mr. Friendly’s and Cellar on Greene, knew they had to help. “When we heard about Carter Strange, we were all saddened, we obviously all work here and we all go out here,” says CJ Aponte, Operations Manager for Caffe Ventures, LLC. Monday night the restaurants hosted a benefit for Carter to help raise money to pay his medical bills. “We host Charity Night here at the restaurants a lot, so it only seemed natural for us to offer to the family to help and our regulars love to get involved in stuff like this, so we are expecting a great turnout,” says Aponte. Organizers hope this event will not only help Carter, but also help raise awareness about crime in Five Points.
