Columbia Chamber names Tanner ambassador of year

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Honors continue to roll in for South Carolina baseball coach Ray Tanner, and not just for his efforts on the diamond.

The Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce has named Tanner its 2011 Ambassador of the Year.

The chamber says it is recognizing Tanner for both his work on the field, where the Gamecocks won a second straight national championship in June, and off the field, where he started the Ray Tanner Foundation, dedicated to helping poor children and kids with medical problems.

A gala honoring Tanner is scheduled for Sept. 22.
