SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — No. 1 draft pick Cam Newton took the field Saturday for the first time with the Carolina Panthers to the cheers of fans ready for a change after last year’s 2-14 season. Newton walked down the hill outside Wofford College’s Gibbs Stadium with his arm around Panthers star runner DeAngelo Williams. “Welcome to Carolina, Cam!” one fan shouted. The applause grew when Newton ran onto the field. He acknowledged the cheers by sticking his right arm up in the air and his hand giving the “No. 1” sign. Newton signed a four-year, $22 million deal with the Panthers and arrived at camp Friday. The several hundred fans cheered for most anything Newton did, including a simple handoff to Jonathan Stewart on his first snap during offensive drills. Copyright 2011 The Associated Press.
