Hilton Head beach project moves ahead
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — A project to rebuild a mile of beach on Hilton Head Island is expected to get started in October.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reported (http://bit.ly/pWhzh4) that the town council has awarded a more than $8 million contract to Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company.
The contract calls for pumping about one million cubic yards of sand onto a mile-long stretch of beach at Port Royal Plantation. A structure also will be built into the ocean perpendicular to the beach to catch sand.
The project was to have started last January, but there were delays getting a state permit.
