Study of bikes on busy Charleston bridge due

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A study on creating a bike lane out of a traffic lane on busy U.S. 17 over a Charleston drawbridge is being released.

Mayor Joe Riley and Charleston County Council Chairman Teddie Pryor release the report on Tuesday.

It focuses on how traffic would be affected if a northbound lane of the bridge over the Ashley River is converted to use by pedestrians and bicycles. The bridge now has four northbound lanes.

Engineers earlier concluded it would not be possible to put a bike path beside the bridge. City officials say there is really no safe way for bicyclists to get from the downtown Charleston peninsula to the West Ashley area of the city.
