Charleston landscape architects talk environment

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Landscape architects in Charleston are joining their counterparts from around the nation to educate people about the importance of designing the environment around homes and buildings.

Landscape architects nationwide are holding events at lunchtime Wednesday. In Charleston, landscape architects will be on hand at six locations to discuss their work.

At one session at Charleston’s Waterfront Park, Mayor Joe Riley receives an American Society of Landscape Architects merit award for the Firefighter Memorial at Mepkin Abbey in Moncks Corner.

The quiet garden with stone markers is a memorial to the nine firefighters who died four years ago fighting a furniture store fire in Charleston.
