Army honors SC Medal of Honor recipient Murray

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Army Medal of Honor recipient Charles Murray Jr. is being lauded as a humble recipient of the nation’s highest military award who put the safety of his soldiers before his own.

Murray died Friday in Columbia at age 89. He received the Medal of Honor for single-handedly stopping an attack on U.S. troops by 200 Germans during World War II.

At least four fellow Medal of Honor recipients took part in Murray’s funeral Wednesday in Columbia.

The funeral cortege was led by soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division, in which Murray served when he was earned his citation.

Murray’s friend, retired Army Col. Kevin Shwedo, eulogized him as a true hero whose battlefield courage was born of a desire to keep his men safe from harm.
