12th Ranked ‘Cocks Defend Well In 2nd Scrimmage

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Steve Spurrier was shut out by his own defense as South Carolina’s attack failed to score during an hour-long scrimmage session. Spurrier credited the Gamecocks defense for its staunch play on Saturday. But he was disappointed in his offense’s showing two weeks from South Carolina’s opening game with East Carolina at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium. The defending Southeastern Conference Eastern Division champions are ranked No. 12 in the AP’s preseason poll. Spurrier brushed that off, calling the Gamecocks players and coaches overrated. Neither of South Carolina’s offensive stars in receiver Alshon Jeffery and tailback Marcus Lattimore saw much action at Williams-Brice Stadium. Starting quarterback Stephen Garcia was 3 of 11 for 33 yards. He threw an interception to defensive back Marty Markett on the scrimmage’s opening play.
