Officials discuss Lowcountry program for moms

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP) — Organizers of a program to help low-income mothers in the Charleston area are giving the community an update on their progress after two years.

The Charleston Regional Nurse-Family Partnership is scheduled to hold a community event on Monday in Mount Pleasant where women helped by the program will tell their stories. Nurses and others connected with the program will also speak.

In the partnership program, a registered nurse makes home visits to expectant mothers in low-income areas. The visits continue from pregnancy through the child’s second birthday.

Officials say studies from other parts of the country demonstrate the program helps reduce dependence on public assistance. The Charleston area program began enrolling clients in 2009.
